Nimbu : Surface Design

Project brief was to create all over surfaces using screen printing technique, inspired from the local flora. My chosen subject was the lime tree. I tried to bring out the invigorating freshness of the lime and the playful character of its flowers, sprinkled over a rhythmic web of stems and leaves.
Plant study -

The purpose of this exercise was to study the chosen plant, not to imitate it as a distant object but to have a deep connection with it in order to bring about the nuanced characteristics which could be reflected in the surface. A key learning of this process was to strike a balance between the economy of lines without losing the essence of the subject

Proposed surface is a wallpaper in pastel base with enlarged elements. While the pastels could bring out the freshness of the subject, the enlarged forms would help appreciate details like rounded buds and flower stamen. Unlike other plants it was noticed that the lime still maintains its character even after enlarging due to its unique form quality of being round and soft, but not delicate.
